The Bradley Cup goes to Scott Walsh

Race 3 for the Bradley Cup

This one is for the Bradley Cup. We sailed in Mill Lake today because this race was supposed to be in Middle lake last week but because of no WMD, we called it.

Winds were forecast to be 6mph out of the East. We set a W/L course with a downwind finish so we could get the second race started sooner. Wind was cooperating and the course set well into the wind. Before the race it looked like the right side was the place to be but most of the fleet went left chasing Scott who had a commanding lead after just a few minutes. Scott was closely chased by John and Mike. To be honest those three guys got so far ahead that they got different wind than the rest of use and sailed their own race throughout. I was no where close to them so I don’t know a lot of detail but somehow Mike out maneuvered John and moved up to second. Mike really wanted this race since he won it last year and felt he was up to a repeat. He almost did.

Scott was doing so well that Jack and I headed after him. Jim went right as he had done several times in practice. Right was wrong. Jack and I fought our way up the fleet, passing several boats on the down wind. The great thing about a Windward Leeward is that some can go right and others left. On the old triangle the reach leg and downwind was more like a parade. Straight down was ok but there was time to be saved by going up right after the windward mark. I did this in both races and it helped me. About a 1/3 of the way down I headed to the mark and found that sometimes I wanted to be starboard and other times port. So tacking downwind was fast. Passed some boats, never was passed on the downwind. I worked hard to catch Jack but never did, but in doing so we both passed several boats and ended up 4th and 5th. Curt then Des finished right behind and Jim was behind him. Des sailed a very good race. Walker was sailing a great race but decided it was a bit warm and took a little dip during the race, he really should have waited until between races, but he sure did get it back up in a hurry. Well Done Walker.

Finish was:

Scott

Mike

John
