Race Two
This race is normally in Green Lake and would have been raced on June 8th but it was cancelled due to lightning. So we had two races on Mill lake the venue for race # 4 which is the ROJO Cup an normally raced on Mill lake.
We had some trouble getting the course set because the wind was coming from the West but with sharp veers to the Northwest. Consequently the wind source alternated from the left side to the right side and up at the weather mark it was coming from all directions. My practice time up led me to believe the stronger wind would be coming more steadily from the left so I was determined to use the left side. Jack and I started two minutes back and did not see a lot of the action that was well ahead. Scott and John and Jim all got a good start but nobody got a bad one the pack was together first time up. All went right so when Jack and I went left I believed we would catch them. But the left was just ok and we didn’t gain much. The downwinds were pretty much a parade with some mixing it up at the leeward mark that changed a few positions. Second time up I went even farther left to catch the fleet and it worked this time. Many boats were close to the weather mark but could not seem to get around it so when I came in hard from the left I was able to pass a few boats. The third time up I again went left but didn’t gain much. At this point I was ahead of Joe, Des, Dave C, and the Jaeger girls who did very well considering. My last downwind I was able to watch as Jim and Scott going up the middle well in the lead with John to their left and Dave way out left were I had been. It looked like Scott and Jim had 1st and 2nd knocked with Skip not too far behind. Then the wind did a dance that stopped Jim and Scott in their tracks. It looked like no one was moving except Dave who was roaring in from the left like a train with a mission. Dave took the flag with Skip catching the better of the flukey wind and crossing second. John caught some of the left breeze and managed to get in before Jim and Scott who finished 4th & 5th. I went left again since I had just seen Dave take that path to victory but getting out to the left seemed to take forever. I tacked back to port and see Joe screaming up the center as fast as Dave had come in from the left, Joe finished well ahead. Well done.
We missed Bruce,(Fishing)and Rob and Ray, (Wedding) and Walker,(not sure)and Doug (working)and Bill ?? but we hope to see them next week. Mike was RC helper.
